CUPRA C&T STRATEGY
SHARPENING BRAND IMAGE THROUGH CLEAR CMF DIRECTION
with the Cupra C&T Strategy 2019 we did not only just pre-develop progressive and sustainable material innovations for future cars, we rather researched, re-designed and defined the core materialities of Cupra. this with the goal to create a clear C&T vision, to sharpen the brand image from a customer perspective and to differentiate Cupra products from competitors /
not only have i designed actively all soft trims, 2D graphics and 3D structures, i've also been leading the project by giving creative direction and by orchestrating the CMF team. supervising all material developments let me refine my knowledge in materialities such as new injected effect polymers, interior paint finishes, plant-based leather alternatives, sustainable materials and waste-reducing additive manufacturing processes like 3D printing and flyknitting /

MATERIAL FUTURES

during this very experimental project i learned a lot about manipulating fabrics and transforming the material through prints, laser treatments or foil applica- tions. especially the combination of two different techniques creates a very unexpected and fresh look. as a base of these experiments i used different kinds of fabrics (adient) and different kind of leather (gst seton pangea) /

the elaborated combination of a very thin and precise embossing and a perfectly placed cnc-perforation allows to create very technical effects. the linear embossing interacts with the perforated pattern which is generated by a subtle fading through the size of the perforation holes (left) /
other precise graphics can be created by laser technology. using leather with an interlayer made of metallic pigments the laser engrave- ment gets a futuristic look (center), while a more subtle effect results from using a normal leather (right) /

screen printing is not a very new technique. but through special inks with metallic pigments (center) and through pushing the thickness of the graphics to a new minimum, very fresh effects can be realized with this printing method. placed elements (left) generate a more technical feeling. combining a placed stitching to the printed graphics makes it even more precious (right) /

inspired by nike’s flyknit and adidas’ primeknit i have
developed several samples through knitting. by mixing and combining different knit structures and special kind of yarns the textiles gain a
higher refinement and more optical depth /
yarns with a metal shimmer underline the futuristic and technical approach of this material research project
(left + center). using the
intarsia technology, precise linear graphics are realized
in the knitted textile (right) /

for giving a strong optical yet haptical effect to the fabric, i used technical honeycomb graphics to emboss the textiles. the threedimensional textures emphasize the subtle shimmer of the material. after the embossing process special foils have been carefully applied onto the fabric to perfectly place it on the right position on the textile /

another interesting outcome was generated through combining foil applications with a placed perforation. precision has been very important in this case as well, because the perforation had to be placed correctly on the thin stripe of the white foil application (left). a second foil application with a silver effect shows the idea of taping and sealing seams (left) /
a foil with flocking effect was used for adding
another haptical component to the basic fabric. like that the textile gained a second textural layer without loosing its clean look (right) /

experimenting with different paints and playing with layers of effect pigments, trained me to mix self-made body colors. by using the Glasurit paint system as a base, I created six different color tones with unique finishes and effects, for example a very matt but almost glowing yellow tone CHARGED PHOSPHOR and a glossy, almost oily shimmering dark violet hue DEEP VOID with a subtle greenish pearl layer for an unexpected and mystic flop /

EXPRESSIVE CHARACTER TRIMS
BACHELOR THESIS REUTLINGEN UNIVERSITY OF APPLIED SCIENCES / 2014
In collaboration with and sponsored by MERCEDES-BENZ
the target of my bachelor thesis project is to explore and redefine different design codes within the surface design related aspects color/material/graphic/finish. this exploration and aesthetical research led to six differentiated
series of decoration trims which have all a very distinct design language and look & feel /
